FiSH Filmfestival Rostock

Young, wild and brave

Since 2004, the FiSH Film Festival Rostock has been the spring highlight for emerging filmmakers from Germany and Northern Europe. At its core are two competitions: JUNGER FILM, the national contest for young German talents, and OFFshorts – Young Baltic Cinema, which presents the best short films from across the Baltic Region each year.

More than just a film festival, FiSH is a platform for young voices and fresh perspectives. Filmmakers up to the age of 26 share stories that matter to them – bold, honest, and thought-provoking. The festival gives these voices visibility and a stage – in Rostock, throughout Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and far beyond.

A defining feature of FiSH are its public jury discussions. In addition to filmmaker Q&As, the jury deliberations take place live on stage and in front of an audience. This unique format offers rare insights into the jury’s decision-making process, invites constructive criticism, and opens up new perspectives — for filmmakers and audiences alike.

But that’s not all: in cooperation with the Media Authority of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MMV), the festival presents the annual Media Literacy Award MV, honoring the best media education projects in the region. Together with PopKW e.V., FiSH also hosts the PopFiSH Music Video Awards, celebrating the best music videos from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Workshops, film talks, and community events round out the program, making FiSH a vibrant space for exchange, learning, and connection.

With more than 4,000 visitors each year, FiSH is one of the most important cultural events in Northern Germany. It strengthens the film and media culture in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, connects emerging talents and professionals across the Baltic region, and builds lasting bridges between young creatives, audiences, and the industry.

Since 2017, the festival has been held under the patronage of the Minister President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Manuela Schwesig. The Call for Entries opens every year at the beginning of November.
